What other customers are thinking about this hotel : We visit San Francisco at least once a year, but twice last year. For the first time we stayed at this hotel. We had been staying at the Donatello, across the street, but a price comparison indicated that the Marriott rooms were less than the Donatello's patio rooms. Thus we elected this J.W. Marriott.
We admired the hotel when it was the Pan Pacific. It's windows and architecture are unique. The open atrium remains stunning. The street entry is nicely protected from weather. We found the personnel at the entry very helpful and accommodating and they stored my golf clubs without hesitation, retrieving them at my request and without delay. They made arrangements for a limo to SFO upon our departure and it was ready and waiting right on time.
We asked for a high room and received one. We looked at one of the redecorated rooms on the west perimeter of the structure and found it extraordinary, though it was not then available to us. Renovation continued on the top floors.
Our room view was onto Mason. It was very nice and quite clean. We guessed, but do not know, that many of the oriental housekeeping staff were retained when the hotel changed hands. They are top notch! The furnishings, though certainly not new, were in good condition and clean. All furnishings worked well. We requested an additional luggage rack and it arrived almost immediately. As we do not dine in our rooms, we cannot otherwise comment on room service, but when we left the hotel in the mornings, generally early, we simply spotted one of the housekeeping ladies nearby and asked for a cleaning. We never failed to find a cleaned room upon our return.
We also found the front desk personnel to be very friendly and helpful. We tend to make our reservation many months in advance, with any requests for special services, so we weren't surprising anyone on the spur of the moment. We were treated well.
We ate one supper in the hotel restaurant. It was not particularly remarkable, but, considering the available restaurants within walking distance of the front doors of the hotel, that is not surprising. The lobby bar stays open late and many visitors used it.
We enjoyed the ambiance of the hotel and have read reviews here which lament the loss of the ambiance when it was the Pan Pacific. We can appreciate that view, but what remains is still an extraordinary hotel in a wonderful location. At these prices for rooms, one has many selections throughout the city, but very few that combine the J.W.Marriott's location, ambiance, cleanliness, service and amenities.
We are returning to the San Francisco J.W. Marriott in July of this year, so we'll review our assessment after our second stay. At this point, we have little doubt that it will be just as enjoyable and we will share our pictures thereafter.
I stayed at the JW just before Thanksgiving, a veeeery quiet period for the hotel. The room was not remodeled, and will benefit from an updating, but it was clean, well maintained and very comfortable -- particularly the bed and desk chair (and how unusual is that!) The bathroom is marvelous. Unlike some reviewers, I found the service attentive. I don't use hotel services much, but when I asked for assistance, it was prompt and courteous. Did not use the restaurants; the bar was nice, but pricey -- hey, it's SF. Location is great. I usually stay at the SF Marriott on 4th. This is clearly a grade up in style and attention, but both are terrific properties, with wonderful locations. If a first time visitor or someone still doing mostly touristy stuff, I might actually give the edge to the hotel on 4th because of the very close proximity to the Fl ine! If you've been to SF before, choose this one for a touch more luxury.
We stayed here for a week in 2006. Fantastic hotel, beds are really comfortable. No complaints!
